The Society of Marple Artists (SMA) is a well-established art society, founded in 1968 – well over 50 years ago. We meet in the Marple Methodist Church Hall every Thursday at 7.30pm for two hours. Non-members are welcome for a small fee, and prospective members can have a couple of free taster sessions.

Our Programme typically works in a 4-week rotation, with each 4-week block featuring expert demonstrations, posed models (clothed or life), a themed still life session and “own work” nights, sometimes featuring group projects. You can see an at-a-glance three-month calendar, plus details and photos from previous sessions.
The Annual Exhibition is our major event of the year, held at the Church Hall over the 3rd weekend in May, where members’ original art works can be enjoyed and purchased – paintings (both framed and un-framed), sculptures, plus hand-made and printed cards. There is detail about the 2025 exhibition, including the ‘Public Choice’ winner.

Two of our members have won awards this summer! David Steeden was voted the people’s favourite at the ‘Paint Knutsford’ contest. David’s painting ( ‘A Sunny Day in Knutsford’) was sold on the day and he has donated the proceeds to Breast Cancer.
Congratulations also go to Steve Ridgway whose picture ’Bahamas over the Goyt’ won first prize at the Hadfield Open Art exhibition. Steve’s picture was also bought on the day.
Well done to both of you, an inspiration to us all to keep on painting!
