I always knew that there was a creative itch that needed to be scratched and I joined a new start art group in High Lane in 1996. I was advised by one of the demonstrators, Maggie Britten, to put my name down for membership of the Society of Marple Artists to broaden my horizons.

Although there was (in those days)  a waiting list of two years, this proved to be good advice and my membership began in 1998. I have been a regular attendee ever since, embracing the role of Secretary for three years. I have arranged coach trips to The Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Halifax, the David Hockney Gallery at Salt’s Mill near Bradford, several visits to The Lake Artists’ exhibition at Grasmere and the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Museum and Gallery at Wakefield.

My work is experimental and although I am a fan of acrylic paint in both standard and heavy bodied forms, I also use oils, watercolour, inks and other mediums,  often in a mixed media context, in a constant quest to make unique art to be enjoyed by appreciative buyers. I have had paintings accepted by The Stockport Open Exhibition, SK Arts, The East Cheshire Hospice Exhibition and The Derbyshire Open at Buxton Art Gallery.

I find that working on three or four pieces at once is stimulating and holds my interest more effectively than labouring over and completing one piece at a time. I often get to a point where I will put a ‘work in progress’ away for a few days, even weeks or months, then revisit it with fresh eyes and progress it.

My art journey has been a fascinating insight into the workings of many artists and I have made some great friendships along the way. I try to paint even if only for half an hour most days and am working towards opening an (initially on line) gallery to showcase my own work and that of selected other practitioners.

I would encourage anyone who harbours a desire to embark on their own art adventure to get started, maybe consider membership of our Society and just ‘go for it!’ Once you have experienced the feeling of ‘getting into the zone,’ you will embark on a wonderful walk along a colourful path of twists and turns.

Browse this website and the myriad of others out there, soak in the different styles and make some marks. You’ll be glad you did!

Happy painting…
