This Thursday was definitely different – we could just have made SMA history!!
We had a full house for our ‘Brush with Music’ session, which started with a short talk on Kandinsky and the relationship between him being able to ‘see’ music, creating shapes and colours – a condition known as Synesthesia.
Then the music began: three skilled local musicians playing percussion and guitar live, allowing all the artists to express themselves and paint their response to the sounds, across two musical sets 🥁🎸🎨 The musicians then played their interpretation of one of Peter’s large abstracts, followed by showing our evening’s work to each other and the band, who attempted to translate some of the images into music.

The musicians were Iain Mellor’s Drum Machine (Iain Mellor and Kate Stringfellow) with Mike Mellor on guitar and keyboard. Iain and Kate accompany harmonica maestro Robin Sunflower at his Quack Open Mic nights on Mondays 8.30pm at the White House pub in Stalybridge and Tuesdays 8.30pm at Aggie’s Bar, Marple. Every last Sunday of the month, the Drum Machine accompanies Robin Sunflower and the ace pianist Robin Dewhurst at the Strines Nightingale from 3-6pm. Every last Wednesday of the month (except December) Iain and Kate play in the Robin Sunflower Band at Big Hands in Manchester from 10.30pm until 2am. Mike Mellor hosts Open Mic nights at the Gilley in Mossley on Sunday evenings.
